FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many uniforms should I purchase?
For Kindergarten you will need 2-3 pairs of shorts/sweatpants and 3-5 shirts, depending upon how often you do laundry.  The children do tend to get pretty dirty due to the art projects and floor time in Kindergarten.  All other grades usually purchase 1 gym uniform and 2-3 regular uniforms and 3-5 shirts.  Keep in mind that you can always purchase additional uniforms throughout the year at the Flynn & O’Hara store in Parsippany.  It is also recommended that you go to the uniform store in July to beat the August crowds.

What shoes should my child wear?
Most Kindergarteners wear sneakers every day.  All children must wear sneakers on gym day or they will not be allowed to participate in gym class.  Please consult the Parent Handbook for options on all other uniform shoes.

Do I need to pack a lunch for my child?
On days that are a 12:45 dismissal (which includes the first few days of school) you can pack a light lunch and drink (no glass bottles or soda) for your child to eat in their classroom.  On full days of school the children in grades K, 1, 2, 6, 7 & 8 eat in the cafeteria from 11:33 A.M. – 11:56 A.M. and have recess from 11:56 A.M. – 12:19 P.M..  Grades 2, 3, 4, & 5 have recess at 11:33 A.M. and lunch period at 11:56 A.M..  You can print out a monthly lunch menu from our web site,
which lists the choices for each day if your child wants to buy lunch.  You have the option of packing a lunch and buying milk, water, etc. separately.  You can also send money in a separate envelope for dessert/snack, which can be purchased in the cafeteria separately.

When do I sign-up to help with activities/parties in the classroom?
Within the first few weeks of school the classroom parents will have a meeting to introduce themselves and go over the teacher’s needs for the year as well as HSA-support needs.  At this meeting there will be sign-up sheets for volunteers to go on field trips, run holiday parties, etc.  This is a meeting you really don’t want to miss.

When will I know what bus my child is assigned to?
Bus pick-up notification is sent directly from the bus company sometime in August.   It will give you the time of pick-up, bus stop location and route number.   For example, the bus will be labeled SJS1 for bus #1.  Buses drop students off in front of the school on South Finley Avenue and the children will walk to their classroom.  At dismissal the first day of school, a teacher will match each child up with an older student on its bus to be their “bus buddy”.  The teacher then walks the children out to the bus pick-up area on South Finley Avenue and makes sure they get on the correct bus home.

When are the HSA (Home School Association) meetings?

The first HSA meeting is at Back to School Night, which is held in September.  The doors open at 6:30 PM for refreshments and the meeting is called to order at 7:00 PM.  At this meeting, the HSA Leadership Team is introduced and the HSA President conducts a brief business meeting.  Afterwards, parents are dismissed to visit their children’s classrooms.  Each teacher is available to provide an overview of the daily activities.

Additional HSA business meetings are scheduled in November and March.  Traditionally, these meetings are held in the school gym and begin at 7:00 PM for refreshments and are called to order at 7:30 PM.
