Lauren Conley, Olivia Gaibor, and four students from William Annin Middle School formed a team called “Shining With Love” to compete in New Jersey's Destination Imagination (DI) Project Outreach Challenge in March. Their passion is to help break the gender inequality barrier by ensuring that every girl has an equal opportunity to do something great in the world while also creating a brighter future for all girls. As a team, they raised over $3,000 for the One Girl organization and received the following thank-you video from One Girl’s CEO and her team: https://youtu.be/6dJBT8d7mzk.
Their efforts also won them an invitation to compete in DI’s Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee from March 24 through March 27, where they placed 6th overall against more than 70 middle-level teams. In addition to receiving the Torchbearer Award for New Jersey, they also received DI’s Global Finals Torchbearer Award. This exclusive award is only given to one of more than 200 teams competing in the third grade through university level Project Outreach category. "Shining With Love" was recognized for their “thoughtful and informed consideration of both the immediate needs and long-term consequences of their project in the lives of 10 young African women by funding a year of school for each of them.”
