Saint James School (SJS) is a co-ed Catholic elementary school located in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. We are part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, and serve students in Grades Pre-K through 8. We’re proud to have recently celebrated our 50th Anniversary!
At Saint James, we strive to create an atmosphere inspired by the Gospel, and everything we do derives from the Catholic Church’s teachings, traditions, and values. We offer Pre-K classes with several options for families with three and four-year olds as part of a program aligned to the New Jersey PreSchool Guidelines. Starting in Kindergarten, our students participate in a full-day program where they learn Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Religion. For students in Grades Pre-K through 8, we also have "specials" classes one or two days per week, which are described below. All of our curricula are based on resources from the Diocese of Metuchen and the New Jersey Department of Education.
In the Elementary Grades, K through 4, we currently have one or two sections per grade level. Elementary Teachers provide instruction in all of the core subject areas, and are assisted by Teacher Aides, Academic Support Teachers, and a Project-Based Learning Team. When there are two teachers in a grade level, a common prep period allows for horizontal articulation and collaboration.
Our Middle School includes Grades 5 through 8. We have two interdisciplinary teams of teachers, each consisting of a departmental Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Religion teacher. One team works with Grades 5 and 7, while the other works with Grades 6 and 8. Currently, there are two sections in each grade level (5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B). Teachers in the same department have common prep periods for vertical articulation (5-8) in their discipline. Team teachers also have common planning periods, for coordination on different team events, collaboration on multi-discipline activities and meetings with our Guidance Counselor and Academic Support Teachers.
Special area subjects include Art, Music and World Language. Our students also have Physical Education and outdoor recess (weather permitting).
For students with special needs, we have an Academic Support Teacher on staff, and also receive assistance from teachers with the Somerset County Educational Services Commission (SCESC).
Each year, our graduates move on to some of the high performing public high schools in our area, or prestigious and competitive private and Catholic high schools, including Delbarton, Mount Saint Mary Academy, Oak Knoll, Villa Walsh, the Academy of Saint Elizabeth's, Gill St. Bernard's, Oratory Prep, Seton Hall Prep, and Immaculata High School.
