For our Catholic Schools Week project this school year, Saint James students will assemble backpack food bags to be distributed to local children facing food insecurity on weekends. The Backpack Program, run by the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, provides a take home bag of food every Friday during the school year to pre-school through elementary grades students who meet federal eligibility requirements to receive free school meals. With this program, recipients are given one-gallon sized bags filled with child-friendly, easy to open and prepare foods that do not require refrigeration or stovetop cooking. Bags include 3 meals, 2 breakfasts, drinks and snacks. During Catholic Schools Week, our students, across all grades, will assemble as many bags as we can fund/supply. The goal is to pack at least 340 bags – one for every Saint James student. Can we pack more? Money raised and items donated will go towards ingredients and supplies for the backpack bags.
